You may have noticed the cottagecore trend happening over the past few years. It’s very popular on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, and it looks as if the aesthetic is going nowhere for now. You can read more about what cottagecore is here.
Cottagecore style consists of vintage, sustainable clothing. Think prairie dresses, milkmaid dresses and florals and gingham patterns. Think countryside living of yesteryear.
Here’s how to get the look.
(This post isn’t an ad, just an enthusiastic shout out to some of the lovely cottagecore style clothes out there).
Dresses
Think Jane Austen and Bridgerton. Flowy florals, countryside gingham, romantic and whimsical. These are some dresses I found while browsing online.
Tops
When looking for tops, you want to look for peasant or prairie tops, Peter Pan collars and corset-type tops. These can be plain, floral, embroidered, gingham, toile, sweetheart or milkmaid necklines. Here’s a couple I’ve added to my wishlist.
Accessories
I love these accessories I found online. This Outlander-style shawl I have been looking for for a while; I even used to try to recreate the style with a Scottish Tartan blanket used as a shawl.
For accessories, think straw bags, hair kerchiefs and obi belts. For shoes, in the summer just simple open-toe flat sandals or Mary Jane’s. In the winter, brogues and laced-up worker boots. If you want to decorate your hair, ribbons and daisy crowns are cute, or for other ideas some picked dainty flowers or pretty hair combs/slides will work just as well.
With cottagecore, you can go all in and really recreate the aesthetic, and look like you have just stepped out of a Jane Austen miniseries. Or you can play it down and just wear a nice, flowy cottagecore style dress with some modern accessories to bring the look into the 21st century. I, myself, love this aesthetic. It’s very easy for me to wear this style of clothing as I love floral and gingham prints, vintage clothing, (even my home is furnished in a vintage style), and what’s not to like about the countryside?
