Pimlico is often a neighbourhood overlooked by visitors to London. It’s slightly off the beaten path and, even as a Londoner, it isn’t an area I frequent. But one dreary autumnal day, my friend and I fancied traditional English cafe food. But that isn’t something that’s especially easy to find in central London, not without spending a pretty penny and then often for a ‘twist’ on a traditional dish. But, Regency Café in Pimlico emerged as the winning contender to fulfil both of our wishes.

In many ways, Regency Café is a typical greasy-spoon. There are a number of dishes to choose from, but most of them include the typical works: fried bacon, eggs, sausages, black pudding, beans and toast. And for those who don’t fancy a fry-up, dishes such as pie and mash, pasties and burgers are on offer too, all of which come at a reasonable price. Service behind the counter is loud and swift (and a tad chaotic), and there’s a rule of ordering before finding yourself a table. Just get there before the lunchtime rush if you don’t want to find yourself negotiating your way into sharing a table.

Sitting on the corner of Page Street and Regency Street, the café is a short distance from Vauxhall Bridge. Unlike others, Regency Café has retained the same vintage vibe in its decor from when it first opened in 1946 without feeling tired and dated. Gingham curtains sit at the windows, a chalkboard announces the specials and vintage pictures enhance the yesteryear vibe.

The very same retro decor makes it easy to understand why the café has been used as a film location in several TV series and films, such as Brighton Rock, Layer Cake and Rocketman.

It’s little wonder that with its affordability and retro feel, this place remains popular with locals, workers and students alike, as well as some tourists. You’re not likely to have the healthiest meal here, but if you’re after a fry-up or a cheap and cheerful meal to see you on your way, then this is the place for you.
